Squat Rack Plans

The Need for Squat Rack Plans

If you’re building a home gym on a budget or want something a bit more customized, then you might look into some squat rack plans. Buying your own power rack for squats, benching, overhead presses, and pull-ups can easily run you over $400. And that’s just the starting price. eBay and Craigslist are great sources for getting good deals on a squat rack and other weight lifting equipment for your home gym. Some people are simply trying to get rid of their equipment and weights for various reasons, so if you do some digging, you can really find some excellent deals.

However, if you have some woodwork experience and already have the necessary tools in your possession, then building your own squat rack may be the way to go.

Do It Yourself Squat Rack Plans

So do you really think you can build a power rack with some squat rack plans? Here’s a basic rundown of the work involved for doing this yourself:

Tools Needed

Don’t worry, as you won’t need much in terms of tools for such a project. You’ll need a hand saw, electric drill (corded), standard drill bits, socket and ratchet set, tape measure, and a spade bit for your drill to bore holes in the wood for the poles.

The reason you need a corded drill for this project is to ensure that after drilling those holes your drill will have the necessary strength and juice to finish the job. It’ll be a pain constantly changing batteries. Also, cordless drills generally lack the strength for this kind of drilling project.

Materials for the Squat Rack

The materials necessary for this and many other squat rack plans are rather basic and depend highly upon how you want to build the power rack. Generally, you’ll need some high quality, framing grade 2×6 pieces of lumber that act as the main support system for the rack. In addition, you’ll need some 2×4 pieces of wood throughout the structure.

You’ll also need 3/4 inch pipes for the spotter bars and for the chin up bar at the top. Once again, depending upon your intended design and setup, you’ll need various sizes of screws, washers, and piping materials.

Is Building a Squat Rack for You?

If you feel any bit uneasy about building your own squat rack, then maybe you’re just better off finding some good deals online and in stores rather than messing around with any squat rack plans.
